Is Timber Flooring Suitable for Singapore’s Humid Climate? A Complete Guides

Yes, timber flooring is suitable for Singapore’s humid climate, provided the right type of timber is selected, the appropriate installation method is used, and basic moisture control is maintained.

Singapore maintains an average relative humidity of 70% to 90%. Because wood is a natural, hygroscopic material, it absorbs and releases moisture based on its surrounding environment:

  • High Humidity (Moisture Absorption): Causes wood fibres to expand. If planks are installed too tightly or exposed to excess ambient moisture, floors can experience cupping (edges curling upward) or buckling.

  • Low Humidity / Air Conditioning (Moisture Loss): Causes wood fibres to shrink. Prolonged exposure to heavy air conditioning can cause gaps to form between planks or lead to micro-cracking if the timber dries out too quickly.

To ensure long-term stability, professional installation must account for tropical conditions:

1. Proper Acclimatisation: Timber planks should sit in the installation environment for several days prior to fitting. This allows the wood to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room.

2. Moisture Control: Cement sub-floors that receive the wood must be completely dry before installation. Concrete moisture meters should be used to check the moisture content of the floor. Glues used for the plywood subfloor and wood flooring itself should have low water content to prevent the wood from absorbing too much moisture. Curing period for the wood glue must be given sufficient time.

3. Expansion Gaps: Leaving precise perimeter expansion gaps along walls and thresholds gives the floor natural room to expand without tenting or buckling.

4. Suitable Species Selection: Certain hardwoods naturally possess higher dimensional stability and dense oil content (e.g., Teak), making them inherently more resistant to moisture changes.  Other wood species like oak and walnut (wood from temperate countries) need more attention to the types of glue used and sub-floor installation method.

Proper maintenance of timber floors requires careful moisture management and adequate ventilation.

  • Avoid Excess Water: Never wet-mop timber floors. Use a dry-mop or well-wrung damp microfiber cloth or dedicated wood floor cleaner.

  • Maintain Air Circulation: In rooms that remain closed for extended periods, keep internal doors open or use dehumidifiers/ceiling fans to prevent stagnant, humid air pockets from forming.

  • Wipe Spills Promptly: Standing water can seep into joints and affect the finish or subfloor if left unattended.
